Background

North York Moors National Park were required to develop an e-government website by 2005 along with all other local authorities in the UK. The website had to provide varied information to a wide audience of businesses, individuals and tourists as well as students and conservationists.

The site was a significant undertaking for the National Park, with a remit to provide key marketing information, create the main method of access to information on the National Park and its local government functions to the public, support the local education services, provide a fun and educational based area of the site to encourage kids to log on and learn, and also to provide a revenue stream for the Park by opening an on line shop.

Solution

Imaginet has worked with North York Moors National Park Authority over many years to create a solution that helps them to meet their organisational objectives. Key features of the project are:

  • A fully accessible design to fulfil the UK eGovernment frameworks
  • With extensive content, Imaginet focused heavily on the site architecture, splitting content up according to the user:
    • Residents received content such as surveys, events, information on planning applications and access to all other Authority services and functions
    • Tourists received extensive information on where to stay, what to do and things to see in the Park as well as travel and destination information
    • The Learning Zone offers significant support to the local education service
    • A Funzone was created to educate and inform young visitors of conservation and wildlife issues before visiting the park and offers great interactivity with on-line games, activities, galleries and a Send a Postcard section
  • An on-line shop with full e-commerce functionality allows the Authority to promote gifts, books and guides to visitors before and after their visit.
  • An extensive content management system glues the site together enabling staff to control the site themselves. In addition to the main North York Moors website, it also powers the Moortosea Cycle Route and North Sea Trail websites.
  • Data is also fed into several touchscreen kiosks across the Park, making highly effective use of a single content management system and allowing instant updates to content held in a variety of locations.

Results

The site has been shortlisted for a Good Communications Award for Accessibility and is hugely popular with visitors and residents alike.
