FirstGroup plc is the leading transport operator in the UK and North America, providing solutions for an increasingly congested world... keeping people moving and communities prospering.

The Challenge:

First Group required new portals for their new smartcard bus travel service.  Launched in Bristol initially, then Hampshire and with other areas coming on board in the future. The portals had to allow customers to register for a card and access ticket and travel information initially with online retailing of tickets to follow. 

A continuous development strategy to improve and extend smartcard services is an essential requirement to ensure the Group delivers on-line services and travel solutions that meet customers' travel needs. 

The Solution:

First Group Plc has delivered two new smartcard portals from Imaginet as part of their new smartcard ticketing strategy which launched in August 2014. With full integration with a third-party Card Management System (CMS) using web services, the FirstGroup portals are highly functional and with an attractive design they make it easy for customers to sign up and manage thier card.

The new touch card has been rolled out to Bristol and Hampshire areas initially and the portals allow customers to:

  • Register on-line for a new card
  • Moderation of concessionary applications such as Students and Child cards
  • Amend their details and password
  • View the tickets loaded on the card as well as their journey history

Following the initial launch, the portals are being developed further to include a new geographical area in Bath for smart ticketing and will also offer: 

  • Responsive design so they can be viewed on all devices
  • On-line retailing of new tickets with integration to the fulfilment servers that add the tickets to the cards
  • Sophisticated logic for ticket sales surrounding user types
  • The ability to buy a new ticket or top-up an existing one

It’s all about making travel as easy as possible on First buses.
