Go Ahead ITSO Smartcard Portals

The Client:

Go Ahead ITSO Smartcard Portals

Award winning smart portals for smart ticketing and account management

Go-Ahead is one of the UK’s leading bus and rail transport groups, employing 23,500 people to make over one billion passenger-carrying journeys every year, from the north-east to the south-west of England.

The Challenge:

To stay ahead of the market in terms of ticketing solutions for their customers, Go Ahead wished to develop a new smartcard ticketing portal that would allow customers to add tickets to a smartcard, top it up and manage their account on-line.

The portals had to seamlessly integrate with the back office Card Management and Fulfilment systems managed by third parties and they also wanted it to be the first in the UK to be ITSO accredited (http://www.itso.org.uk), which is the national Specification, or Standard, for smart ticketing.

The Solution:

As Go Ahead Group’s preferred web developer for over 5 years, Imaginet worked with ACT, the Card Management System supplier, to deliver the UK’s first ITSO accredited portal for the group in 2010.  This was followed by ten other consumer retail portals over the next 4 years and we are currently in the process of delivering five B2B portals for the GAG Bus Companies, enabling corporate accounts to manage customers, cards and tickets in bulk, helping to attract new business and reduce management resources.

We designed the key portals to be simple yet attractive; with intuitive navigation so that customers can get to the information or function they want quickly, no matter what device they are using. The design is also white label so that a portal could be created by re-skinning the core solution with a new brand without having to create a tailor-made design each time.

Imaginet has integrated a wide range of web services from ACT, providing essential services to customers, including:

  •      Account and Card Management

  •      Ticket selection and on-line retailing.

  •      Top-up and continuous authority

  •      Journey and transaction history

  •      Replacement cards

  •      Reporting and monitoring

The Results:

The portals take 100,000s transactions each month across the Group and have helped to increase revenues substantially.

The portals have met all aims so far:

  • The first ITSO accredited portals in the UK
  • Winning a British Transport Award for innovation
  • Attracting new customers and increasing revenues

Riz Wahid, Head of Retail at the Go-Ahead group commented:
