Passengers travelling on Go-Ahead services in Plymouth are now benefiting from a simpler and more seamless way to travel, following the launch of the UK’s first contactless card-as-authority initiative for local transport.

The new system allows customers to travel using a contactless bank card as their ticket, removing the need for traditional paper tickets. By tapping on and off with a contactless payment method, passengers can move more easily across the network with a faster and more convenient travel experience.

The initiative marks a major step forward in modernising public transport ticketing and improving accessibility for passengers. Designed to make travel more intuitive and flexible, the scheme reduces friction for both regular commuters and occasional users, while helping to streamline boarding and simplify fare payments.

The Plymouth launch represents the first phase of a wider rollout programme across the Go-Ahead network, with the initiative set to expand to additional regions including Brighton & Hove Buses and Go South Coast. The broader deployment will help bring consistent, account-based ticketing experiences to more passengers across the South of England, supporting Go-Ahead’s wider ambitions around integrated, customer-focused public transport.
