Passengers across the Merseyrail network are now benefiting from a simpler and more flexible way to travel, following the extension of Tap & Go to contactless bank cards, smartwatches and smartphones.

The expansion marks a significant step forward in making public transport more accessible, allowing customers to travel without the need for traditional paper tickets or pre‑loaded smartcards. By tapping in and out using a contactless payment method, passengers can move seamlessly across the network.

The Tap & Go system is designed to remove barriers to travel, particularly for occasional users, visitors and those seeking a faster, more convenient experience. Customers no longer need to plan fares in advance or queue for tickets, helping to make rail travel more intuitive and stress‑free.

Nigel Roberts, Managing Director at Imaginet, said:

“This is the third contactless ticketing project Imaginet has delivered in the last two years. Working alongside multiple third parties, we were able to deliver real value for Merseytravel and their customers in a very short timeframe. We’re looking forward to seeing the scheme grow, as we have in other regions where we’ve supported customers with their own Account‑Based Ticketing schemes.”
